Psalm 37
We will be looking at verses 1-6. It is quite relevant to what is happening in our nation and around the world today. Human nature has not changed.
1 Fret not yourself because of evildoers. Be not envious towards wrongdoers. Rioting, burning, looting, injuring, and killing is what we see happening. We also see godless people becoming very wealthy. Corruption seems to pay well. Immorality is celebrated. But, do not fret, do not envy. Why?
2 For they will wither quickly like the grass, and fade like the green herb. They are wrongdoers. They will quickly wither and fade away. Life is short. We are a mist, a passing shadow. They have their reward in full. This life is their only hope. How sad. Only the foolish live as they will never die. Also if you read verse 13, the Lord laughs at them for He sees their day is coming.
3 So how do we fret not and envy not? What is the answer? Focus on The Kingdom! King David tells trust in the Lord and do good. Dwell in the land and feed on His faithfulness. How can God use you in your land? What do you have that He can use? Prayer, time, talents, funds, goods, a servant's heart? Trust Him with it. He is faithful. He is waiting for you to do it. If you are faithful, you won't be fretting! The Lord will keep us busy if we let Him.
Envy not. What do wrongdoers have that we need? Nothing! They should be pitied. We already have something far more valuable than their violence and riches. The Father, Son, Holy Spirit, and the salvation of our eternal souls. Someday they will envy us!
4 Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Delight yourself in this wonderful salvation and serving Him. Serving the one true God is delightful. True joy and true fulfillment come from serving the Lord. His faithfulness and His blessings will be what your heart will come to desire.
5 Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him and He will do it. Commit and trust. This is an opportune time to do this and be about His will for your life. Many people are searching for answers right now. Don't get caught up in all the deception and confusion. God is not confused or deceived. Make a commitment to Him today to do good. Trust Him and He will do great things through you. As a result of you doing these things, what else will He do for you?
6 And He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your judgment as to the noonday. This is a wonderful promise! Your light will shine in your land as you commit your ways to Him. People will see the good things you do. He will protect your integrity. It will be clear your judgment is secure in the Lord. What a witness to those around us!
It is so easy to get distracted, fearful and worried in these times. The enemy is using most of the media to constantly beat us down with all the bad news. The lack of good news is amazing. We have been programmed for the bad news. So let us focus on The Good News! Let us make a commitment to focus on what Psalm 37 has to say to us. As you read through it, there are some phrases and action words that we as believers are told to do. Fret not, envy not, trust, do, dwell, feed, delight, commit, rest, wait, cease, and depart. These will help get us through these difficult days and be a witness to those in the land around us. May they see Jesus in us as they are lived out. This is true wisdom for our lives in these times. Let us take this wisdom and make a difference in the land.
Blessings, Pastor John
