Jonah 3

                                                         On To Nineveh
Now after repenting and turning to the Lord instead of fleeing from His presence, our merciful God gives Jonah another chance to be a part of the Lord's plan. Aren't you glad He gives us another chance to be a part of what He is doing in the world today? After Nathan confronted King David concerning Bathsheba, look at what David said in Psalm 51:10-13. As we will see, this is what happened in Jonah and Nineveh.
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from Thy presence,
And do not take Thy Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of Thy salvation,
And sustain me with a willing spirit.
THEN I will teach transgressors Thy ways,
And sinners WILL be converted to Thee.

1 The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time. The Lord does not forget His plans and they will be accomplished. He will do it with or without us! I have often wondered if the people we read about in the Bible were His first choice to do great exploits for Him. It is a privilege the Holy Spirit is offering us to be used by Him to change the world and build The Kingdom.

2 Go to Nineveh. When Jonah goes, then the proclamation comes. Obedience precedes the unveiling of the Lord's plan. We must exercise faith as we follow the Lord's plan for our lives.

3 Jonah arose and went. I always wonder what he looked like after being in the belly of a fish for three days. He would not smell too good either! Did he get a bath first? We do not know, but it sure would have gotten the people's attention as he walked in Nineveh. It was a very large city for its time.

4 Yet forty days and Nineveh will be overthrown. The word overthrown is the same word used in Genesis 19:21 concerning Sodom and Gomorrah. Completely destroyed. This is what would happen to them unless they turned to the God of Jonah. Remember that the sailors became extremely frightened when they heard Jonah followed the Lord God of heaven. Nineveh knew what God had done to Egypt and in Canaan. Here is another similarity to Jesus. Jesus's first message in Matthew 4:17 was, Repent for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand. Jonah preached to a city, Jesus to a nation and then from the cross to the world. John the Baptist said exactly the same thing in Matthew 3:1. In Luke 11:30-32, Jesus told the people that they were a wicked generation. Why? They did not repent but asked for a sign so Jesus could prove who He was. Nineveh repented when Jonah preached. Jesus did many miracles yet this generation would not repent. They would be condemned by the people of Nineveh at the judgment. Amazing! A very strong word and warning! I believe the Kingdom of heaven is coming soon. Have you repented and confessed your sins before God?

5,6 The people of Nineveh believed in God and the king covered himself with sackcloth and sat on ashes. This is a great and wonderful move of the Holy Spirit! A very wicked and exceedingly large city turned to God. Thousands upon thousands came to the Lord in Nineveh. Jonah rebelled, was disciplined, repented, and then God used him in this way. In such a short time, this may be the greatest awakening in history. How does God want to use you? The Holy Spirit desires to do mighty things in each generation. No matter how dark it is or it becomes, the Holy Spirit can overcome it.

7,8 The king reacts and immediately issues a decree that man and beast were to fast and call on God and turn from their wicked ways and violence. This is a great conviction. This is the work of the Holy Spirit. John 16:8.

9 He is calling out and hoping for the mercy of God. The hardest heart can be moved by a word and the Holy Spirit. Manasseh was another very wicked king that repented and turned to God. 2nd Chronicles 33:6, 10-16.

10 God saw their deeds and relented concerning the calamity. God sees and He hears our cries and our prayers.

                                                   Things To Consider
Have you let the Lord give you another chance to do what He has called you to do?
Has the Lord given you a word to proclaim?
Are you praying for a mighty move of the Holy Spirit where you live and for our country?
Have you read any books about awakenings and revivals? This is the solution for our dark and distressing times.
