The Obedience of Jesus

The ultimate example of obedience is Jesus. He always did the Father's will for His life. Jesus said He only did what He saw the Father doing. He also said My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work. Where was this obedience leading to? Unbelievable rejection, suffering, and shame and the Father turning away from Him when Jesus needed Him the most. "My God, my God, Why hast thou forsaken Me?" are the saddest words in the Scriptures. Jesus knew and told His disciples these things would take place. Luke 18:31-34. Yet, Jesus with joy and determination was obedient to the Father's will and completed it. What an example for us in our walk of faith! Did you ever think about Jesus reading the Scriptures about Himself when He was young and knowing He would suffer and fulfill them? We will look at a passage that did just that!

Isaiah 52:13-15 and 53
13 He will prosper and be highly exalted as a great ruler and King. His character will be above reproach.

14 The crucifixion was the most terrible thing to see. He was marred more than any man. Barely recognizable as human. How did Jesus feel when He read this?

15 His death and story will shock people and their rulers. This will be now and into the future.

1 Prophets for the most part were not believed. Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Zechariah, Jesus. Luke 11:47-51. God did great work.

2 Four hundred years of silence from God. A time of darkness and sin and turning from God, parched ground. Isaiah 1:1-9. Jesus was ordinary in appearance.

3 He was despised and forsaken by men. John 1:10,11. How do you think Jesus felt about this world when He came from heaven? A treasure from heaven, yet He was not esteemed or valued at all. This is true today.

4 Surely! Obviously, He bore our griefs and our sorrows! But man thought He was being punished by God for His sins. Blasphemy was one of the charges.

5 BUT! That is not what was really happening. He was not being punished by God for sin. He was pierced through and crushed for OUR iniquities! The rebuke or scolding, which was for our peace, fell on Him. He took it instead. By His scourging, we are healed of our sins.

6 Why did He have to take it? Because we have all gone astray. We all do what we want to do. The Lord laid all the iniquity of the world on Him. A very great weight to bear. Jesus experienced this in the garden. He sweat blood. What great obedience for God and the world!

7 He was silent before His accusers. Remember He was silent before the high priest. Pilate was amazed when Jesus was silent before His accusers. Why was He silent? He was guilty. He took on our guilt and there was no defense.

8 It was a mock trial. Oppressed and judged and taken away. The people did not even consider that He was killed for their transgression and they deserved to be whipped. They were blinded by rage, hate, selfishness, power, and religion. Do not be led by emotions. You will go astray.

9 Criminals were buried together. Joseph of Arimathea gave Him a new tomb. There was no violence or deceit done by Jesus to deserve death. He was the king of kings yet He was assigned to be buried without a celebration or memorial and with the wicked. Most of the Kings of that time were buried in Jerusalem. Some were embalmed and for some, there was a celebration of some sort. Not Jesus.

10 God was pleased to crush Him causing Him much grief. Again, the garden. IF! God was pleased if Jesus was obedient to death. He will see His offspring, His brothers and sisters who to come to Him and God. How long will Jesus reign? His Kingdom will have no end. God will bless His rule.

11 As a result of the travail of His soul. Hard labor, toil, and pain. He will see the good pleasure and prosperity of the Lord on His reign. Jesus will rule with justice and righteousness and there will be peace. He will see the millions of His offspring. He will see millions born into His Kingdom during His eternal reign. His ultimate obedience will produce the ultimate results! Our obedience will produce results too. It is powerful! His knowledge of God's will and doing it will be our justification as He bears all of our burdens.

12 Therefore, because of all these things Jesus suffered and did, His reward will be great. He will divide the spoils of victory. Because He poured His soul out before the Lord. He suffered as if He was a transgressor. Jesus was treated and counted as a criminal, crucified between two thieves. Yet what really happened was He bore the sin of many and interceded for the transgressors. Jesus interceded then and He intercedes for us still. Jesus is the great intercessor. That is amazing unconditional love! That is amazing obedience and it changed history and the world and multimillions of souls. That is powerful!
